WINNIPEG —; Small in stature, but big in heart, receiver Ryan Smith is taking reps with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers first string offence this week at their three-day mini-camp. He’s penciled in at the slotback position and for Smith this camp is all about working on his timing and building some chemistry with his new quarterback Drew Willy.

“You got to take every single rep and take advantage of it.” Smith said. “Just to work with Drew to get the timing down on routes. It’s been good for the offence and good for the team. We got to keep progressing as a team and come training camp with the defence out there we have to start making plays.”

After an outstanding career at North Dakota State the 5’7″ Smith caught on with the Saskatchewan Roughriders. In his second season with the Riders Smith just missed the thousand yard receiving mark, coming up only nine yards shy with 991 yards. He also had seven touchdowns and even though he’s with a new team, he’s in the same boat as everybody else, trying to learn the new playbook.

“Get a grasp on it so come training camp it’s not completely oblivious to everything that’s going on,” said Smith.

It’s early yet, but the 24-year-old still likes what he sees so far from this new group of Bombers hopefuls.

“You know you got some athletic guys out here. You got some guys that want to win, some guys that want to compete.” Smith said. “It should be a good year, we just got to keep progressing and getting better.”
